About Us

The World Health Organization (WHO) has predicted that more than one billion people will die from tobacco related causes during this century. Tobacco consumption is increasing worldwide and so are its harmful effects. It is frightening that the tobacco epidemic is moving towards the poorer and least educated worldwide. If left unchecked, this addiction will soon become the single leading cause of death. The harmful effects of tobacco on nearly every organof the human body have been scientifically decumented and smoking cessation interventions are among the most cost effective of all medical interventins. In india, the tobacco cessation programmes need to address the issues of bidi smoking and consumption of smokeless forms of tocacco in addition to cigarette smoking. The grave health risks associated with tobacco consumption need to be disseminated on a war footing. Realising the urgency of the problem, a "Society for Tobacco Control" Institute, University of Delhi has been registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 with the aims for helping people to stop smoking, preventing people from beginning to smoke and protecting non-smokers from the exposure to tobacco smoke. We earnestly request the medical fraternity to join the Society to make India a tobacco free country.
